I’ll start like this. Crime is about pursuing short cuts, chasing maximum reward through minimum effort. Violence is also a short cut: the quickest, surest and laziest way to ascendancy. Art asks for the maximum degree of effort and gives no certainty of any reward, other than criticism. Art is the opposite of crime. That is why, for rehabilitative purposes, it is important that offenders are introduced to it. This blog is about the practice of arts work in criminal justice; specifically creative writing. It is also a wider commentary on the practice and business of working with offenders.
